Celebrating Milestones at Seafarers: From Groundbreaking to Topping Out

30 April 2024

We are excited to announce two significant milestones in the Seafarers project, marking key moments in the transformation of this iconic Melbourne site.

Groundbreaking: Bringing History to Life

After years of planning and anticipation, construction has officially commenced at Seafarers Rest, Melbourne’s newest riverfront park, and was celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Lord Mayor Sally Capp together with project collaborators and partners on the 11th of April 2024.

Heralding a new chapter for this historic waterfront location. Once a bustling hub of maritime trade, the Goods Shed stood as a testament to Melbourne’s rich heritage. Now, after decades of underutilisation, Seafarers Rest is set to become Melbourne’s newest public park, reconnecting the city with its maritime past.

Designed by landscape experts OCULUS, the park promises to be a vibrant green sanctuary along the Birrarung-Yarra River. With expansive lawns, winding pathways, and playful nods to its maritime legacy, Seafarers Rest will provide diverse recreational space for residents, guests, and the broader community. The park’s design reflects a thoughtful consideration of both history and modernity, inviting visitors to engage with the area’s maritime stories while enjoying the natural beauty of the riverfront.

Topping Out: Reaching New Heights

We also recently celebrated another milestone as Seafarers reached its highest point, marking a significant achievement in the project’s construction timeline. Led by builders Icon, the topping out ceremony was a moment of reflection and excitement for the project team as they looked ahead to the next phase of development.

The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the façade, described by Project Director Brett Howlett as “perhaps the most complex facade this city has seen.” Inspired by the site’s riverfront setting, the façade seamlessly blends industrial heritage with the movement of the Yarra River, creating a visually stunning addition to Melbourne’s skyline. Its intricate design and precision engineering are a testament to the dedication and expertise of the project team, turning Seafarers into not just a building, but a legacy project for the city.

As Seafarers continues to take shape, we look forward to witnessing the ongoing transformation of this iconic Melbourne site. From groundbreaking to topping out, each milestone brings us one step closer to realising our vision of creating valuable gathering places for people to connect, create memories, and foster connections within the precinct and beyond.
